MDAC compatibility

Are previous versions compatible with later versions - i.e. a server with
2.71 communicates with a server on 2.8.
any known problems?What kind of server ? SQL Server ? Why SQL server has to depend upon client
end components like MDAC ? ..unless there is a protocol change from both the
ends and that applies only for SQL Server Drivers not for the MDAC component
