MDAC won't play

Trying to set up a harware testing machine. OS is 98SE, the test software (Sandra MAX 3) won't install as it "requires MDAC 2.5 or greater".

Tried install ing MDAC 2.8, it just sits there doing nothing in an open window. Same result with MDAC 2.7.

Tried installing Component Checker, nothing at all happens!

MDAC 2.8 installed fine on another 98SE just last week. Anything else? Um ... both machines are running NAV 2005.

So I'm a bit stuck for ideas. Anyone have any advice, please?

Did you clean the environment of the failed installation of your test software (Sandra MAX 3)? That app may have done something behind that blocks MDAC installation. Can you also contact the vendor of the test software see if they know any solution?

I don't know if it's any help but there was an MDAC critical update found in Add/Remove programs - so I deleted it ... as I apparently don't have any version of MDAC if I understand the CC non-response correctly.

Would contact vendor of test software but I'd guess they would reply something like "Why are you asking us for a solution to a Microsoft install problem?".

Has anyone had a similar problem (MDAC won't install & CC apparently does nothing) and can you please help?

You can try to install MDAC 2.1, then 2.5 and then 2.8.

MDAC version error

Hi,
I have a problem to install SQL Server 2000 Development Edition onto my
Windows 2000 professional P.,I have a check of my MDAC version using the
Component Checker, it tells that the version of my MDAC is 2.53.6202.0 which
should be 2.53.6200.0.
Does anybody know why this happened and how to solve it?

FrankThe Component Checker you are using likely had not been updated for the
security patch you have installed. If you get a newer version of the
Component Checker
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/dataacces
s.asp) it should report 2.53.6202.

MDAC Installation Failure

When trying to install MDAC 2.7 on a Windows 98 client I
receive the following message:
Setup has determined that you do not have enough free
disk space to install this software. The following box
shows how much disk space is required on each drive.
....and there is nothing displayed in the box. If I
click the next button the setup exits. There are 5GB free
disk space available. Thanks in advance for any
suggestions.Look for a file called dasetup.log. This log is the MDAC setuyp log. This
log may have more details. The event logs may also have more details.
Make sure the system drive has enough space.

MDAC Hot patch

With regards to MS04-003 that just came out a few days ago,does one need to
install this MDAC update on SQL Servers servers and on
clients ? Can I just go ahead and apply it on our production systems without
testing ? If i install it only on the server, does it still leave me
vulnerable if I dont apply it on the clients ? Does this require a server

LOL !!!!! Famous last words, if I've ever heard any.
Ideally, you would install the patch on clients and servers in your test
environment, run a battery of sanity tests just to make sure you don't miss
anything. I've witnessed many problems where the client and server had
provider versions out of sync, so you would be best off making sure both the
server and all of its clients have the same version / patch level applied.
NOTHING in your environment should change, ever, without testing first!
You're begging for disaster. Just because it worked for someone else,
doesn't mean it will work for you, unless they have the exact same
network/hardware/software config and are using the exact same applications
and the same users.

I need to install MDAC 3.7 on two of my front end servers. One is Server 2000 with MDAC 2.7, the other is Server 2003 with MDAC 2.8. From my understanding I ned SQL SP3 to get this version of MDAC. The two front end only 1 or 2 components of SQL server on
them, should I stil get the SP for these servers?

I'm not real sure which version of MDAC you are looking for.
There is no MDAC 3.7. The latest version is 2.8. You can
download the latest MDAC version from:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/Default.aspx
Having clients and servers in synch with their SP versions
can make troubleshooting easier. It's not a bad idea to have
the clients running with the latest service pack.

MDAC 2.8 Install - any issues?

Hi all,
About to start a project to upgrade to MDAC 2.8 from MDAC 2.6 on a number of servers. Has anyone encountered any issues with this? Also, if we do NOT upgrade several client workstations, might we expect problems as a result?

We are aware that we need to patch MDAC for the vulnerability issues, but we are trying to comine this with a server upgrade for servers at risk. Has anyone had experience on a similar project?

MDAC 2.71 Memory Leak

Hi everyone,
I understand SQL Server 2000 SP3 contains an MDAC 2.71
version that causes Memory Leak. However, If I install
MDAC 2.71 through Windows Update, would the server suffer
from Memory Leak also?
I have an SQL 2000 server running on Win 2K. My server
was never installed SP3. But, I did update MDAC 2.7
version via Windows Update. Few months later, my server
now is experiencing Memory Leak. When I run MDAC component
checker, there does have mismatches of MDAC 2.7 SP1 or 2.7
XP SP1. I wonder how do I fix that? I don't really want
to install SP3a. Would install the latest version of MDAC
(2.71a) fix the problem?

MDAC installation ? Is this on a dual or higher processor
server ? I am researching the same but on multiple
processor problem with the MDAC.

of the versions of MDAC passed the tests. The closest one
is 2.7 SP1 (2.71.9030.9) with only One error on

McAfee VirusScan vs MS SQL Server 2000?

I wonder if anybody here has anything to say about my planning to
install the latest version of McAfee's anti-virus software, VirusScan,
on a Windows 2003 Standard server, running MS SQL Server 2000 (with the
latest patches).
I've read that some have reported problems with VirusScan when they're
running Banyan Vines, but this is strictly TCP/IP.
If you have any recommendations or warnings to give me about this, I
would really like to hear it.

have a third-level tech representative conference in with us. Our concerns
where justified by the vendor.
Limit the Active Screening and Passive Scanning to exclude the data, log,
and database backup files.
If you are inside your LAN/WAN, you should not be runing inbound email nor
should you be using any network shares on a dedicated SQL Server
installation. In this case, there would be very little risk to virus attack
on the server.

We will be installing McAfee AV onto our Active/Passive cluster environment
and I would like to know if we need to make any exclusions to specific files
or folders or if there is a particular way the product needs installed so
operations are not disrupted?

May I install Reporting Designer on XP

I'd like to trial Reporting Service 2000. But it couldn't install on XP
system.
How can I develop the reports on XP platform within VS 2003?
If I cannot, I have to reinstall my laptop. How sad it is!

John WangYou can definitely do this. I assume what you want to do is to have RS
server (the report designer is definitely not an issue) on XP. You have to
have a version of SQL Server 2000 installed (RS uses that) also you need to
have IIS running. By default IIS is not installed with XP and you have to
add/remove programs, windows (I believe) and add in IIS.
What you want to do is definitely possible.
Also, if the reports are to be deployed elsewhere then the problem is that
you tried to install the server portion of RS instead of just the client
tools.

Go above some 50-70 databases and you will notice that the tools (EM...) aren't that well suited.
And, a large amount of databases can be a sign of bad design. (Doesn't have to be, but can be.)
